Video too large to send on iPhone? Here’s what to do
A video is too large to send when it is bigger than the limit of the app you are sending from. Gmail stops at 25 MB, Discord at 20 MB on a free account, and WhatsApp at 100 MB on a fast connection. You can send a smaller copy sized for that app, send only a clip, or share a link to the full video instead.
Why is the video too large?
Because iPhone videos are big. At 4K and 60 fps, iOS lists about 400 MB for a single minute. Most sending apps have a limit far below that, and some lower the quality on their own before sending.
| Where you send it | Limit | Detail |
|---|---|---|
| Gmail, Outlook.com | 25 MB attachment | Bigger files go as a Drive or OneDrive link |
| Apple Mail with Mail Drop | 5 GB | The recipient gets a link for 30 days |
| WhatsApp video | 100 MB at 720p on a fast connection, 64 MB at 480p on a slow one | WhatsApp also compresses media when it sends |
| WhatsApp document | 2 GB | The file is sent as it is |
| Discord, free account | 20 MB | Checked before Discord compresses; Nitro Basic 50 MB, Nitro up to 1 GB |
| Messages (iMessage) | Apple doesn’t publish a limit | Apple’s guide suggests 360p for text messages |
What are the ways to send it anyway?
- Send a copy sized for the app. ClipLeve’s Send a smaller version has presets for messages (up to 64 MB) and email (up to 25 MB), or a size you type, such as 20 MB for Discord.
- Send only a clip. Shorter is the most reliable way to fit a limit without dropping the resolution too far.
- Send a link. Mail Drop, iCloud, Google Drive or OneDrive keep the full quality, and the person downloads it.
- Use AirDrop when the person is nearby.
- On WhatsApp, send it as a document, up to 2 GB, so it isn’t recompressed.
How do you pick the right size?
Aim below the limit, not at it, because some services count the whole message. ClipLeve already leaves a 10% margin. The longer the video, the lower the resolution that fits. In 64 MB, the size ClipLeve uses for messages:
| Resolution | Longest clip that fits |
|---|---|
| 1080p | 2 min 04 s |
| 720p | 5 min 31 s |
| 540p | 9 min 41 s |
| 360p | 17 min 22 s |
For any other limit, enter the length and the size in the video size calculator.
Does sending a smaller version change the original?
Not with ClipLeve. Send a smaller version makes a separate file, shares it from the share sheet, and deletes it afterwards. It is never added to Photos, and the original stays as it was.
Questions
Why does a video look worse after I send it in WhatsApp?
WhatsApp compresses media when it sends it, and its default video limit is 720p on a fast connection and 480p on a slow one. Sending as a document avoids that, up to 2 GB.
Is there a size limit for iMessage?
Apple doesn’t publish one. In practice, a smaller file sends faster and more reliably, and Apple’s own guide suggests 360p for text messages.
What size should I choose for Discord?
20 MB or less on a free account. Discord says it now checks the size before compressing, so the file you pick has to be under the limit already.
