Compress a video for Discord on iPhone

Updated · By Luis Junior, maker of ClipLeve

Discord’s free upload limit is 20 MB since August 2026, and Discord now checks the size before it compresses anything. So the file has to be under 20 MB before you upload it. From an iPhone, that means about 40 seconds at 1080p, a little over a minute and a half at 720p, or a shorter clip of the moment you want to share.

What is Discord’s upload limit now?

Discord’s upload limits, from its File Attachments FAQ
AccountUpload limit
Free20 MB (was 10 MB until August 2026)
Nitro Basic50 MB
NitroUp to 1 GB

Discord says it is experimenting with different limits, so some accounts may see larger ones. It also changed how the limit is applied: mobile now checks the file size before compression, as desktop always did. A big iPhone video is refused instead of being shrunk for you.

How long can a clip be to fit in 20 MB?

Longest clip that fits in 20 MB, by resolution
ResolutionLongest clip that fits
1080p39 s
720p1 min 43 s
540p3 min 01 s
360p5 min 25 s
Estimate from ClipLeve’s encoder settings, not a measurement. Real sizes vary by video.

Gaming clips and fast motion lose more detail at a given size than a still scene, so a short clip at a higher resolution usually looks better than a long one squeezed into 360p.

How do you make a 20 MB copy on iPhone?

  1. In ClipLeve, open the video and tap Send a smaller version.
  2. Choose a custom size and type 20 MB, or 50 MB with Nitro Basic.
  3. If ClipLeve says the clip is too long for that size, choose Send only a clip and keep the part that matters.
  4. Share it to Discord from the share sheet, or save it to Files and upload it in the channel.
ClipLeve’s Send a smaller version screen with sizes for messages and email, a custom size and Send only a clip.
A custom size covers limits like Discord’s 20 MB.

Questions

Why won’t Discord upload my video even though it compresses videos?

Since August 2026, Discord checks the file size before compression on mobile too. An iPhone video over 20 MB is refused on a free account, even if a compressed version would have been smaller.

Does Discord accept iPhone HEVC videos?

Discord lists MP4 with H.264, HEVC (H.265) or AV1, and MOV, among its common file types.

Is 20 MB enough for a gaming clip?

For about 40 seconds at 1080p by ClipLeve’s estimate. For longer clips, drop to 720p or trim it.
