Free up iPhone storage taken by videos
Videos take the most room because a single minute of 4K at 60 fps is about 400 MB. You can get space back four ways: delete the ones you don’t need, let iCloud Photos keep the originals in the cloud, keep a lighter copy and remove the original, or record future videos at a smaller setting. Whatever you delete waits 30 days in Recently Deleted before the space returns.
Why do videos fill an iPhone so fast?
Because the camera records at a high bit rate. With High Efficiency, iOS lists about 60 MB for a minute of 1080p at 30 fps, 170 MB for 4K at 30 fps and 400 MB for 4K at 60 fps. Ten minutes of 4K at 60 fps from one birthday party is about 4 GB.
To see how much your library takes, open Settings › General › iPhone Storage and tap Photos.
What are the ways to get space back?
| Option | What you keep on the iPhone | Trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| Delete videos you don’t need | Nothing of those videos | Gone for good after 30 days in Recently Deleted |
| iCloud Photos with Optimize iPhone Storage | Space-saving versions; originals stay in iCloud | Needs enough iCloud storage; originals download when you open them |
| Keep a lighter copy, remove the original | A smaller video in Photos with the same date and location | Some detail can go; check the copy first |
| Record at a smaller setting | Future videos only | Lower resolution or frame rate from now on |
Why didn’t storage come back after I deleted a video?
Because deleted photos and videos go to Recently Deleted and stay there for 30 days, in case you change your mind. The space comes back when that album is emptied, by you or by iOS once the 30 days are over. You find it in Photos, under Utilities, unlocked with Face ID, Touch ID or your passcode.

How do you keep a video but make it take less space?
- Open ClipLeve. It lists your biggest videos first, each with an estimated light size.
- Pick a size and compare it over the video before anything is processed.
- Save the light version. It goes to Photos as a new video and is checked against the original.
- Tap Replace the original. iOS asks to confirm, and the original moves to Recently Deleted for 30 days.
- To get the space back sooner, empty Recently Deleted once you are sure.
Making a light version adds a file at first. Space only comes back once the original is removed and Recently Deleted is emptied. ClipLeve measures your available space before and after, so you see what really changed.
With ClipLeve Pro, a queue takes up to 50 videos at one size and can move all the originals to Recently Deleted with one confirmation at the end.
Questions
Does iCloud Photos free up space on my iPhone?
With Optimize iPhone Storage on, yes: the iPhone keeps space-saving versions and iCloud keeps the originals, starting with what you open least. It needs enough iCloud storage for the whole library.
If I delete a video on my iPhone, does it leave iCloud too?
With iCloud Photos on, deleting on one device removes it from your other devices too. Recover it from Recently Deleted within 30 days if you change your mind.
How much space will light versions save?
It depends on how the videos were recorded. A minute of 4K at 30 fps is about 170 MB; ClipLeve estimates about 39 MB for it at Balanced. See your own numbers in the video size calculator.
